MARRIAGE

THE SACRAMENT

Marriage is a sacrament of the Church, one of total and lifelong love between a man and a woman. It is a sacrament because it, in some way, reflects and participates in the total and unfailing love of God for humankind. The Catholic Church teaches that marriage is a Christian vocation. wedding is a celebration of this sacrament.

For a marriage to proceed at Sts Peter and Paul's, at least one of the parties must be a baptised Catholic and both parties be free to marry, i.e. both have never been validly married before. If one or both of you were involved in a previous religious or civil marriage, then please indicate this before you book.

THE CHURCH

Our church has a capacity of approximately 300 people. The church is open and accessible for viewing every day of the week, from around 7:30am to 6pm. You are most welcome to come and have a look around in between those times.

THE CELEBRANT

The Capuchin priests currently looking after Sts Peter and Paul's are available for most weddings. They are Fr Dean Mathieson, Fr John Spiteri, and Fr Bernard Morawski.

Alternatively, you are also welcome to invite an outside Catholic priest to celebrate your wedding. Please advise the parish of the celebrant’s details if this is the case.

WEDDING TIMES

Weddings without the Nuptial Mass usually take about 30 minutes. Weddings with the Nuptial Mass will take about 60 minutes. Weddings may be booked for the following times:

Saturdays, 1:30pm or 3:30pm.

Sundays, 1:30pm or 3:30pm.

Weddings can also be held during the week, in which case times are negotiable.

FEES

To marry at Sts Peter and Paul’s, the fee to the church is $1200 when a resident priest celebrates the wedding or $1300 if you bring your own priest. A deposit of $100 needs to be made before the booking can be confirmed. The total balance is due one month prior to the wedding. The deposit is not refundable in the event of a cancellation.

The fee above that goes towards the church does not include the donation to the priest for celebrating your wedding, which is customarily around $300. This can be given either on the rehearsal night or on the day of the wedding.

PREPARATION FOR MARRIAGE

A marriage preparation program is an integral part of preparing for your wedding. The Archdiocese of Melbourne requires every preparing couple to complete a certified preparation course, before a Catholic priest or deacon may witness their marriage. The priest for your marriage celebration will discuss the details of the marriage preparation with you.

BOOKING YOUR WEDDING

Before you begin the booking process, it might be nice to find a time to have a face-to-face chat with Fr Dean Mathieson, the parish priest. A good time might be after our 10am Mass on Sundays.

You can then complete the preliminary enquiry form on this page, or email stspeterandpauls@gmail.com, to enquire about available dates and times. If you are happy with the date and time, and ready to proceed, we will then send you some additional information, including access to an online booking form and payment details for a deposit. Once we received both the online booking form and the deposit, your booking will be finalised and completed.
